First, check your local community, regional or provincial websites to see if they offer any grants, rebates or tax credits for home improvements. As one example, the provincial government is currently offering the Ontario Healthy Homes Tax Renovation Credit. This is a refundable tax credit for seniors 65 and older and family members who live with them.
If you qualify for the Ontario Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit, you can claim up to $10,000 worth of eligible home improvements on your tax return. The amount of money you may get back for these expenses is calculated as 15% of the eligible expenses you claim.
